A Non-Executive Director (Non-Exec) is required for Tandem Group plc, an AIM listed growth company with revenues currently of £37m and Market Cap of £31m. Tandem Group is a designer, developer, distributor and retailer operating in four segments:

  • Toys, sports & leisure
  • Bicycles
  • Home & garden; and
  • eMobility

The company is based in Birmingham.

We are looking for an experienced Non-Executive Director with a marketing and entrepreneurial background, who can demonstrate a successful track record as Director of a quoted company which will have grown from £30 to £100m+ mkt cap. A knowledge of the retail sector B2B and B2C with marketing experience is essential.

The Board meets monthly in Birmingham; the time requirement will be 1-2 days per month covering formal and informal time initially, more during induction.  The Non-Exec will sit on both the Remuneration and Nomination Committees. The remuneration is £21,250 pa.

The company’s trading operations include:

  • MV Sports & Leisure and MV Sports & Leisure (Hong Kong) – supply of licensed and own brand wheeled and outdoor toys, sporting goods, cycles and accessories to retailers with products sold in over 25 countries. Licensed brands include Peppa Pig, Paw Patrol, Barbie and Pixar. Tandem have a major licensing deal with, amongst others, The Walt Disney Company in the wheeled toy sector including Disney Princess, Frozen 2, Spiderman and Avengers. Own brands include Hedstrom (outdoor play), Kickmaster (football training) and Ben Sayers (golf) ranges. eMobility brands include Li-Fe and Wired.  Tandem are seeking to substantially grow the eMobility part of the Group as this mode of transport becomes more prevalent and Government legislation changes.
  • Tandem Group Cycles – historic brands including Dawes, Claud Butler and Falcon and more recently Squish lightweight children’s bikes sold via independent bicycle dealers and national retailers alike.
  • Expressco Direct - the business was created following two acquisitions with the ethos of bringing premium quality goods to the market that were fully accessible to the consumer. Websites include Garden Comforts - outdoor living products; At Home Comforts – homeware and household gadgets; Pro Rider Leisure – fitness and leisure products; Pro Rider Mobility – mobility products and aids; Snap Frames – snap frame display solutions.
  • 2020 Summary:
    • Gross Profits up (3.4%) - fuelled by strong domestic margin enhancing sales performances across bikes, golf and B2C businesses
    • Group revenues down (-4.6%) - Driven by decline in toy FOB bulk buys/key licenses and uncertainty amongst key nationals
    • Consumer demand for products remained high
  • 2021 Outlook:
    • Over 200 new toy products available in 2021
    • Seven new licenses signed.
    • New ladies golf range.
    • New Digital Marketing Manager appointed to drive core brands/categories via social media i.e. e-bikes, e-scooters, Squish, and key products alongside enhanced retail content.

 

Non-Exec Director Requirements/Criteria

  • Quoted Company Marketing Executive Director who has grown a business from £30m to £100m+ mkt cap.
  • Must be entrepreneurial and ambitious with sound commercial acumen.
  • A quoted company Board level Executive Director within the retail/leisure sector, able to demonstrate success in growth and international expansion in a £30–100m turnover business.
  • Some industry/process knowledge very useful e.g. bikes/toys/leisure and or importing/distribution/retail/marketing/online background.
  • Able to offer guidance on strategy and see the risks and opportunities for the business.
  • You will join the Remuneration and Nomination Committees.
  • You should have enough time availability to make an effective contribution.

 

Time commitment is 1-2 days per month for Board meetings, initially more during induction. Board meetings are held monthly are held in Birmingham. Remuneration will be £21,250 per annum.
